WINNERS BRACKET

Sorcerer Gold Phil 2, Worth Firecrackers 0

WP Keilani Ricketts 3H, 6K  LP Rebecca Patton

The Firecracker fuse fizzled.  After three harum-scarum, wildly exciting, last minute victories, the Firecrackers ran into the proverbial unmoveable object in the person of Keilani Ricketts.  The Sorcerer can rest, waiting for the Firecrackers and Gold Coast Hurricanes, who eliminated So Cal Athletics 4-2, to settle out the losers bracket.  More, under Gold double-elimination rules adopted last year, the challenger will have to defeat Sorcerer twice, which gives the Sorcerer a tremendous advantage, in that either of the two challengers will have already played two games this morning.

Sorcerer’s first run, top 3rd, was scored by Janel Salanoa, who singled to left, was advanced by Shenise Cox’s sac bunt.  Emily Allard drove in the run.  Ensley Gammel relieved Patton to pitch the 4th.  The Firecrackers recorded the first of their three hits in bottom 5th; Hallie Wilson singled to right field.  Lauren Chamberlain laid down a sac bunt. Jessica Shults reached on an error at 1st; Leah White in to run.  Baillie Kirker walked to load the bases and raise the potential for a patented Firecracker rally.  But Ricketts notched another K against Mariel Massei and Kylee Lahners ground out to short.  Dana Perez singled to open the Firecracker 5th; stranded.  Sorcerer 6th: Jessica Vest walked; Allard reached on an error at 3rd.   Consecutive fielder’s choice plays forced both runners.  Sorcerer 7th: Kayla White popped to short; Shelby Asbury looked at a 3rd strike; Salanoa singled to left, and Cox slugged an rbi double, 2-0.  Massei led the Firecracker 7th with a single, but Lahners and Perez ground out and Kathlyn Medina went down swinging.

LOSERS BRACKET 1

Gold Coast Hurricanes 4, So Cal Athletics 2 So Cal Athletics eliminated

WP Hannah Rogers  LP Kayla Massey  Sv Rachele Fico

Moultrie singled and scored in bottom 1st when Castro reached on an error at short.  Strassner scored on an error at 2nd in the 2nd.  Rogers relieved starter Leslie Jury to pitch the 3rd – in keeping with coach Marty Cooper’s need to rotate his pitching corps to be able to compete in a possible four games on Sunday. Pinch runner Powell scored on Moultrie’s double in the 4th.  In the 5th, Castro doubled and scored on Holle’s sac bunt.  The Hurricanes loaded the bases in the 6th with one out, no score.  The Athletics started a rally in the 7th.  After Monka struck out, Prussic singled but was forced by Monreal.  With two out, Gonzales singled, Schutte singled, Monreal scored. Vry returned to pitch to Dedeaux who singled, scoring Gonzales. Fico relieved Vry, striking out Kelly to end the game.  The So Cal Athletics finished fourth.

LOSERS BRACKET 2

Gold Coast Hurricanes 3 Worth Firecrackers 1 Worth Firecrackers finish 3rd

Starters Rachele Fico, Hurricanes  Rebecca Patton  Firecrackers

The defending 2008 champion Hurricanes vs the 2007 champion Firecrackers.

Michelle Moultrie opened the game with an infield hit.  Marissa Menendez singled to center.  Ensley Gammel relieved Patton.  The runners advanced on a passed ball.  Bailey Castro drew a walk, loading the bases, no outs.  Kelsey Horton singled, two rbi.  Samantha Holle advanced the runners with a sac bunt. Castro scored on a failed pick off attempt.  Brienna Rojas struck out; Shults retrieved the drop ball, fired to 1st to end the inning.  GCH 3-0.  In the bottom Hallie Wilson singled, advanced on Mariel Massei’s sac bunt; Jessica Shults walked; Leah White in to run.  Fico struck out Baillie Kirker and Lauren Chamberlain.  Kylee Lahners led the Firecracker 2nd with a double.  Dana Perez flied out.  Lahners scored when Kathlyn Medina reached on Fico’s throwing error.  Jamie
Sullivan struck out, Wilson flied out, 3-1 GCH.  Massei singled to start the Firecracker 3rd but was stranded.  GCH 4th:  Gammel struck out Rojas and Davis; Vitale ground out. In the bottom, the Firecrackers led with a single (Lahners), the fourth consecutive inning in which the Firecracker lead batter had a hit.  Perez popped, Medina forced Lahners, Skinkis struck out.  GCH 5th: Moultrie singled with one out; stranded.  Firecracker 5th: Wilson singled but Massei and Shults popped; Kirker was hit by a pitch; with two on, Chamberlain flied out.  GCH 6th: Castro, Horton and Holle down in order.  In the bottom, Lahners, White and Medina, down in order.  Top 7th: Rojas lined out to center. Wykemia  Davis beat out an infield bunt.  Cara Vitale struck out.  Bottom 7th: In earlier games, the Firecrackers owned the final inning to stage their heroics.  Sullivan reached on an error at 2nd.  Wilson sacrificed with a bouncer to 3rd. Massei flied out.  Shults flied out to right, and the amazing Firecracker ability to stave off defeat had come to an end.

The resilience of the Gold Coast Hurricanes was summed up effectively by their pitching coach, “Fico’s back.”  The successive weeks of highschool championships, ASA qualifiers, interviews, the All American game, and the relentless pressure of the press had seemed to throw the LSU-bound ace off her game.  And, the whole team stepped up their games.  Now, they face the formidable task of beating the Sorcerer twice.
